Temporary Internet Files

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Temporary Internet files are very important in the context of Web search. Every Web page a searcher visits stores data (pages, videos, audio, etc.) in a specific file folder on their computer's hard drive. This data is cached so that the next time the searcher visits that Web page, it will load quickly and efficiently, since much of the data has already been loaded via the temporary Internet files rather than from the Web site's server.

Temporary Internet files can eventually take up quite a bit of memory space on your computer, so it's important to clear them out once in a while. See How to Delete Your Internet History for more information.
