What is a podcast?
According to our
Radio Guide, a podcast is the following:
- An audio file you create in .mp3 format...
- Which contains your own radio show or any audio you wish others to have...
- That you upload along with an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) file to a server (your website for instance)...
- That your intended listeners download using one of several programs that have been created to retrieve your audio file automatically...
- So they can listen to it at their convenience on their own iPod or .mp3 player.
Why would I want to look for podcasts?
Podcasts are fun, quirky, informational, and personalized to your interests. You never quite know what is going to happen, and that is most of their appeal. However, podcasts are somewhat difficult to find using conventional search engines such as Google and Yahoo. That's where Podscope.com comes in.
Podscope-A Free Podcast Search Engine
Podscope is a specialized search engine that only looks for podcasts. It searches for words that you specify that it finds in various podcasts around the Web. I typed in the phrase "search engine", and came up with a few good results.
When your search results come back, you'll be able to click on the plus sign, which opens up your selection even further. Podscope gives a short and sweet annotation of the podcast, a link to the originating site, an XML feed if available, and a link to a preview of the podcast itself.
According to Podscope's FAQ, they are hoping to add more multimedia to the search engine in the coming months. You can also submit your own podcast to their directory of listings. Overall, a good tool that will help you find the podcasts you might be looking for.
