Opinmind, a Blog Search Engine

What is Opinmind?

Opinmind is a unique kind of blog search engine. It not only searches blogs, but it searches those blogs for opinions expressed on whatever subject you might be looking for.

How To Search With Opinmind

I admit, when I read the front page blurb that states "Opinmind collects the opinions of bloggers all over the world on every subject imaginable", my first reaction was "yeah, sure!" However, I was pleasantly surprised.

Try any subject or topic in Opinmind - for the sake of a really good example I'll use a somewhat polarizing search query: George Bush.

Opinmind results are very different than what you might be used to. Instead of one column of search results, there are two. The green on the left represents positive opinions, and the blue on the right represents negative opinions.

There are a couple ways to sort and rank these already interesting results. On the top, there are two radio buttons labeled "sort by strength" and "sort by time." Sorting by strength allows you to rank your results according to the strength of the opinions expressed; in my case, I had "I love George Bush" and "I hate George Bush" as polar opposites. Sorting by time gives you the option to sort results by date.

You'll also see something called a "Sentimeter" at the top of the search results page. The colors on the Sentimeter-green and blue-directly correspond to the colors in the search results (green is positive, blue is negative). My first instinct was to go and use this to slide my results around; alas, it's just an information tool. I would love to see Opinmind change this Sentimeter into a truly useful search ranking option.

Why Should I Use Opinmind?

I thought this was a truly intriguing blog search engine, and it was interesting to see the huge glob called the blogosphere nicely sliced into two distinct camps. I would love to see some extra features:
  • Make the Sentimeter truly useful by turning it into a interactive slider.
  • No RSS feeds on search results? Are you kidding me? That needs to change, and fast.
  • Faster indexing. The latest posts about Google, for example, were over 24 hours old.
