The Grey Lady has quietly rolled out a neat innovation that will make it easier for you to enjoy your daily Times - the Skimmer, a prototype that is meant to duplicate as near as possible a "real" newspaper.

All headlines from each section - world, technology, business, sports, etc. - are culled into a simply designed grid. You can quickly get your news by skimming headlines, and if anything catches your interest, just click on the link. Heck, they've even got keyboard shortcuts:

  • Show Next Section: Down Arrow or Space
  • Show Previous Section Up Arrow or Shift+Space
  • Show the Home Page Section: h
  • Select Section By Number: Press and hold s, type the # of section, then release s
  • :Select Article By Number: Press and hold a, type the # of article, then release a

I like it - and I hope more busy newspaper sites follow suit.
