MySpace Deemed Harmful to Children...Well, Duh

By , About.com GuideFebruary 20, 2006

Follow me on:

Am I ever getting tired of seeing stories like this one from ZDNet titled "MySpace: Murdoch's big hope, parents' nightmare":
"The phenomenal growth of the Web site and popularity among youngsters has made it a magnet for adult sexual predators, authorities say.

Recent headlines that rival those in Murdoch's tabloids, such as "Man arrested in MySpace.com teen-sex case," "Sex predators are stalking MySpace; is your teenager a target?" and "Space Invaders" have dotted airwaves, newspapers and television news across the United States, triggering a nationwide backlash against the site.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is investigating a number of sexual assaults with links to MySpace.

"What's troubling is the pornography and the access by children," Blumenthal said in a telephone interview."

WOW! You mean that there's bad people on the Internet? Seriously? It's not a good place to let your kids run willy-nilly? And there's pornography too? Holy Cow, no kidding.

Honestly, the reason I get weary of seeing the MySpace fire alarm pulled all the time is this: the Web is not a playground. Without proper supervision, children - and that's anyone under 18 - are going to see and hear things that they probably shouldn't be. And before parents get all hyper about little Jonny seeing another Brokeback Mountain knockoff, maybe they should remember that they were the ones who let little Jonny get on the Web in the first place. The Web is not a babysitter, it's not a friendly place full of rocking chairs and whittling, but with the right parenting and sensible precautions children and teens can use the Web safely - even that bastion of evil, MySpace.

Search Safely on the Web: As a parent of three little anklebiters, I take my responsibility to guard them on the Web very seriously. And with that in mind, I wrote the Internet Safety Family Checklist. It's a list of guidelines you can use to make sure your kids are having fun AND keeping safe on the Web.

Kid-Friendly Sites and Search Engines: If you have children, or are a child yourself, then this list of search engines and other sites just for kids is for you.

Cyber-Spying? Maybe: The Internet can be a fun place, but there's lots of bad stuff out there, especially for the unprepared. Kids especially run the risk of putting themselves in harm's way on the Web. Read my review of "Cyber Spying", a book written to help people keep their families and loved ones safe on the Web.

first of all if one were to post porn your account is to be delted idiots, know what your talking about, myspace is not a pornagraphic site, 2nd if you get hurt of whatever from a sexual predator, then you deserve it because of your stupidity of talking to people you dont know online and there is ways to be safe on myspace, you can set your account to private and one cant add you if they dont know your last name myspace is not evil thats the gayest thing ive ever heard itsa a way of finding old friends and keeping in touch with people. i can most deffinetly think of more positives then negative on the site, and can easily debate them.(:

after reading only the first page, this is ignorant crap. have you even used myspace/facebook/whatever? you can set your profile to private, and only some dipshit would put enough personal information on their pages. PORN WOULD BE DELETED STRAIGHT AWAY FROM THESE PAGES!

please, stop looking at teens as if they don’t know what sex is and as if they don’t sought after it. heck, being a teen myself I know most of my guy friends watch porn, some of the chicks too! you know why the internet is so popular with teens? they get what they want anonymously WITHOUT adults kicking up a big fuss like this here.
