Konfabulator and Yahoo

By , About.com GuideJuly 28, 2005

Follow me on:

I actually was not familiar with Konfabulator until I received multiple notifications that Yahoo had bought them. Here's what they're all about:
"Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can tell you your WiFi signal strength, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather.

What sets Konfabulator apart from other scripting applications is that it takes full advantage of today's advanced graphics. This allows Widgets to blend fluidly into your desktop without the constraints of traditional window borders. Toss in some sliding and fading, and these little guys are right at home in Windows XP and Mac OS X."

Oh, man. For the consumnate utility geek that I like to believe I am, this is like an entire jelly-filled donut store to Homer Simpson. Free, even. Free donuts, man!! Donuts...arghhhh...

Okay, anyway. Yahoo will eventually change the Konfabulator name to Yahoo Widgets, which I'm thankful for since it's hard to spell (you don't know how many times you might have been reading "Klonfabultor" or "Konflabulator"). Also, Konfabulator will be heading the charge for Yahoo's open development community:

"Since we're kick-starting Yahoo's Developer Network, this means that our current Konfabulator community will become the founding members of Yahoo's Developer community. Widgets like TV Scraper won't need to scrape any more (there goes the name) and will get our full support during development. Awesome. Grassroots support from third party developers is one of the primary reasons why Yahoo is so excited about Konfabulator, and that Yahoo is 100% commited to keeping Konfabulator free and open for anyone to build Widgets (and to create a massive installed base for developers to distribute their Widgets to)."
Here's just a few of the cool widgets I found at this site:
  • Volume Control: This nifty little widget controls your system volume so IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME.
  • MegaWatcher: Feel like donating some money to your local or state gubermint? Then MegaWatcher is for you. Watches "the last MegaMillions draw results, along with the current Jackpot amount, and also displays the number of Jackpot winners of the prevous drawing."
  • Ebay Feedback Watcher: For the serious (obssesed) Ebay citizen who needs to keep an eye on the feedback meter.
There are a ton more. I'm in geek heaven.

Related: Konfabulator runs on both Windows and Mac systems. For some more good dowloads, check out Apple and Macintosh resources, general PC download sites, or domain name and registration services on the Web.
