Breaking News-Bomb Blast In London-Terrorist Attacks

  • Xinhuanet reports "Three London tube stations were cleared and three underground lines were shut down after minor explosions took place on Thursday."
  • July 21: More bombings?: "Up to four explosions hit London's transport system on Thursday, exactly two weeks after more than 50 people were killed in blasts on underground railway trains and a bus."

  • Blair leaves G8 summit after explosions in London: British Prime Minister Tony Blair Thursday left the Group of Eight summit by helicopter to be briefed on the attacks in London, but the G8 summit will continue.
  • Christian Science Monitor: As many as 40 people may have been killed and many more have been injured in a series of at least seven explosions in the London underground subway system and on a double-decker bus. The BBC reports that British Prime Minister Tony Blair said it was "reasonably clear" there had been a series of terrorist attacks.
  • The BBC states "An Islamist website has posted a statement - purportedly from al-Qaeda - claiming it was behind the attacks."
  • BBC News had a good article on the secred war against Al Qaeda; includes information about the organization that is claiming responsibility for this latest attack.
  • Albawaba.com, a Middle East news aggregator, has this statement from those claiming to be responsible:
    "A group calling itself "The Secret Organization of al-Qaeda in Europe" posted a claim of responsibility for Thursday's blasts in London, saying they were in retaliation for Britain's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. The statement, which also threatened attacks in Italy and Denmark, was published on a Web site popular with Islamists. "Rejoice, Islamic nation. Rejoice, Arab world. The time has come for vengeance against the Zionist crusader government of Britain in response to the massacres Britain committed in Iraq and Afghanistan," said the statement. London blasts In its statement, the group said "the heroic mujahedeen carried out a blessed attack in London, and now Britain is burning with fear and terror, from north to south, east to west." "We warned the British government and the British people repeatedly. We have carried out our promise and carried out a military attack in Britain after great efforts by the heroic mujahedeen over a long period to ensure its success."

  • MSNBC.com is following the event. Warning: when I logged on this site, there were some pretty shocking pictures right on the front page. If you have kids with you, be careful.
  • BBC News is of course providing excellent coverage as usual. This is probably one of the best places to check for up to the minute news.
