Definition: A wiki is a Web site or Web portal that can be edited, organized, and collated by anyone who is in the wiki's user base. A wiki is meant to be a collaborative, community effort that keeps on top of anywhere from one to hundreds of thousands of different topics, updating information as it becomes available.

Examples of wikis on the Web:

  • Wikipedia: Wikipedia is "a free content, multilingual encyclopedia written collaboratively by contributors around the world."
  • Swicki: Eurekster Swickis are "search engines tailored to you and your community. They learn from your users and show what's hot with your people." You, as the creator of the Swicki, have complete and utter control of the search results since YOU are the one who figures out what searches are most relevant to your site, what sites these searches should be pulled from, and how the search engine looks.
  • Wikileaks: The goal of Wikileaks is to provide a safe haven for journalists, private (and public) citizens, and anyone who might need to be protected from the information they upload to Wikileaks; in other words, if you're a whistle blower and need a go-between to communicate your information, Wikileaks is one of the best resources you can find.
