Obituaries 101

By Wendy Boswell, About.com Guide

What is Obituaries 101? :
Obituaries 101 is a site with links to newspapers around the United States, Canada, and China. These links go directly to each newspaper's obituary section.
How do I search for obituaries at Obituaries 101?:
You can't search for a particular person's obituary at Obituaries 101, they only provide links to newspaper obituary sections. If you know the newspaper that the obituary you're looking for will be in, then you can certainly scroll through Obituaries 101's listings to find that newspaper, then search through the newspaper's obit listings.
Search Engine Alternatives to Obituaries 101:

Obituaries 101 seems a bit counterproductive. Here's an easier way to skip the middleman (Obituaries 101) and get closer to what you're looking for:

  • Go to Google.
  • Type in the person's name you're looking for in quotes plus the word obituary: i.e., "john smith" obituary (however, since there are so many obits written on a daily basis, this doesn't usually turn up good results unless the person you're looking for is relatively well-known).
  • Use obituary sites such as Obituary Registry, Obituary Daily Times, or the Internet Obituary Network to track down obituaries.
Why should I use Obituaries 101?:
Obituaries 101 might be a good place to add to your Web research tools, but there are more effective ways to find what you're looking for. I suggest reading How to Use the Web for Obituary Searches.
