What is a wiki?

By , About.com Guide

What's this "wiki" thing I keep hearing about?

A wiki is an open source of content that anyone can edit. Wikis have gained popularity with the rise of Wikipedia, a community encyclopedia; many educators, students, and people in the business world (including myself) have found them to be an invaluable planning tool.

For instance, there’s PBWiki, an easy to use Web page that multiple people can edit, WikiHow, an open source Web manual, and Wikimapia, a Wikipedia/Google mashup that allows users to geotag locations with appropriate articles.
