What is Skype, and why should you use it?

From Wendy Boswell, About.com

Basically, Skype is a way to make free phone calls to anyone anywhere in the world, using a microphone and an Internet connection.

Here's the official Skype definition:

"Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world. Also, until the end of the year (2006) you can also make free calls to landlines and mobiles in the US and Canada from Skype. And even though the calls are free, they are really excellent quality. If you and your friends, family or business contacts are using webcams, you can also make free video calls. You can even call landlines and mobile phones at really cheap per minute rates (and there's no setup or subscription fee)."

In addition, you can use Skype to chat with other people, send files, make conference calls, video calls, and more - all over the Internet.

While most of Skype's services are free, there are some features that cost a little bit (SkypeOut, Skype Voicemail, SkypeIn, and Skype SMS). For the purpose of this tutorial, I'm going to stick with the free stuff.
