Definition: In the context of the Web, a plug-in is a piece of software that adds a specific functionality to a another software program.

For example, in order to display Flash-based programs within a Web browser, the user would need to download and install the latest Flash plug-in. This plug-in adds a specific function to an existing software program (the Web browser).
