Definition: A broken link refers to a hyperlink that no longer points to its original destination. This could be for a variety of reasons: the page has been moved, the page has been renamed, etc. Clicking on a broken link will usually return what's called a 404 error page, which is simply an automated message telling the user that the Web server could not locate the Web page that corresponds to the clicked hyperlink.
