Definition: An alt tag is the descriptive title or content added to an image placed on a Web page. Alt tags are useful for Web searchers in several different ways:
- If an image cannot be displayed on the Web page, the alt tag is a good alternative
- The alt tag ensures that that image will show up in search engine results, therefore providing a better user experience and easier access
- If Web searchers choose to turn off graphic options within their Web browsers, an alt tag can provide them with relevant information in the absence of images
