Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. I followed the directions on your site. I'm still not getting any hits!

A. Give it time. Search engines and directories are notoriously fickle when it comes to indexing sites, and perhaps their various spiders just haven't gotten to you yet. While you wait, this might be a good time to keep polishing up your SEO skills.

Q. If I do everything you have suggested, I'm guaranteed to be #1, right?

A. That would be a big NO. I cannot guarantee that if you follow every instruction to the letter, that you will get the rankings you want. However, I will say this: if you work hard on optimizing your site, you will see results. And, perhaps eventually, you'll even be #1.

Q. What is the best way to perform search engine optimization on my site?

A. Absolutely, the best SEO technique is to provide users with the content that they are looking for. Building your site according to the standards and instructions on this site is one of the best ways to ensure more traffic.

Before You Write

Think carefully and specifically about the question you want answered. Here are some tips to be sure you phrase your question in a way that will get answered quickly:

  • Don't send attachments. I just can't open them, and so sending them won't help answer your question. If you really want me to see something, you can post it to a Web site and send me the URL.
  • Ask a specific question, and put it in your subject line (abbreviated). I get a lot of email, and if I can't tell your email's not spam, it might get dumped.
  • Be nice and use your manners! We're both real people behind these computer screens, after all.
  • Please let me know if I was able to help you, or if you like the site. It's nice to know these things!
Need to contact me? Like all the guides at About.com, I'm a real person. You can email me at websearch.guide@about.com. However, please check the resources on this site first before emailing me. You just might find the answer before I do!
