Google Blog Search Beta

Wednesday September 14, 2005

Google Blog Search officially rolled out around 9 PM PST Tuesday night - I was waiting breathlessly by my computer in anticipation so I could be the first to report. No, actually, that's a lie; I was watching the taped season premiere of Family Guy and folding three baskets-full of laundry. But the first option sounds more exciting.

Okay, back to Google Blog Search. It's here, and here are my first impressions:

  • It seems to be based mostly on blog title or post title. I queried "search engines" and got a ton of results (over 300K), and the top five or so had "search engine" in the title. That's fine and dandy, but needs to be improved to search content more.
  • Content search is a bit hit and miss. I searched for "Google blog search", and folks' Technorati tags are showing up as content, which could skew search results since the tags are somewhat repetitive.
  • I love having a search engine specifically for blogs, but why couldn't Google just have added blogs to its main search channel? Perhaps they're testing it out here and then will add it...but that's pure speculation on my part.
  • Way cool, you can subscribe to your search results with Atom or RSS. And if that does not make sense to you but you still would like to subscribe to a particular blog search - say you want anything that comes through about "cheese doodles", you can just copy and paste the URL from your search results and paste it into various feed readers, such as Bloglines, or if you have Firefox, click on the little orange square on the right-hand bottom of your screen and your search results will be added to your Live Bookmarks.
  • How fast is Google Blog Search indexing posts? I'll tell you once I see this one in there. You might want to read Google Blog Search FAQ if you're still wondering how all this works together.
