Put your own spin on Web searches with Blekko

By November 1, 2010

Follow me on:

blekkoThere's a new search engine in town, and its name is Blekko. Blekko gives searchers the ability to "slash" their searches; basically, this is a smart filter that lets you put your own spin on your search results.

Here's an example. Say I wanted to find information on politics (how's that for a vague search term?). However, search results in any search engine are going to be extremely cluttered, especially if I wanted only a certain kind of political information. That's where Blekko really starts to be intriguing.

Here's my search in Blekko for politics. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Say I wanted only results from very liberal points of view. Here's how I would frame the search in Blekko:

/politics /liberal

This brings back results from such sites as Mother Jones, The Nation, etc. You can also rank your results instantly by date using this search (for our example, let's look at President Obama):

Barack Obama /dr=2005-2006 Very nice. How about if you only want to see results from forums for one particular subject? Try this:

parenting /forums

I invite you to play around with the different slashtags that Blekko has to offer. You can find all of them organized by topic, as well as built in slashtags that act as advanced search operators. Blekko reminds me of other make your own search engine services, as well as YubNub for search shortcuts. Give it a try and tell us what you think.

Thats a truly unique feature to boast of by Blekko.
