The National Endowment for the Humanities has unveiled a fascinating new site entitled Picturing America, aimed at bringing classic masterpieces of American art from the last two hundred years into classrooms and libraries. The goal is to help students and citizens gain insights into American history through its art, and the site is pretty amazing. Here's a sample of what the gallery looks like:
Click on any picture that you like, and you get a detailed explanation of the inspiration behind that particular work, as well as an artist bio and detailed historical background.
Definitely worth a visit; the art is gorgeous!
