Google Maps has a fun (and extremely useful) feature for creating maps of where you'd like to walk. Simply type in the address you'd like to walk from and to, and you'll see a link for "walking directions". You'll see an extremely detailed map that you can use on your walk; mileage included.
Google Maps is not the only search engine that is currently offering this sort of information - Ask.com also offers maps for those who would rather not use a car. Just fill out the to and from fields, click on the "Walking" tab, and you're all set.
