What is a torrent?

Follow me on:

Today, we're going to talk about one of the Web's biggest crazes: torrents.

Torrents, also known as bittorrents, are part of an extremely popular peer to peer file distribution system used for transferring large files within a large network of people. You can use torrents to download books, movies, television shows, games, and a whole lot more. Torrents take some getting used to, but today, I'm going to give you a free pass to Torrents 101.

Isn’t torrenting illegal?
I know someone who was investigated by the FBI for something like that.

Torrents and filesharing is NOT illegal. Downloading and distributing copyright material is what IS illegal.

Torrent and filesharing actually is illegal. Yes it is illegal to distribute it but downloading it is essentially the same thing. You are technically stealing the creative work of another person if you download these.

Dear Austin,
“Torrent and filesharing actually is illegal.”

So you are telling me that if I uploaded a word document, that I wrote, to a torrent site, and if someone downloaded it we would both get in trouble. You are really, really dumb. Fo real.

Also, I guess the government is illegal then, because they use Torrents for sending information back and forth quickly. Oh, I forgot, along with many other multi-billion dollar companies.
