Search the Web visually with SearchMe

Tuesday November 18, 2008
searchme This week I've come across a search engine that I think you'll all really like, and that search engine is SearchMe, a gorgeously rendered search tool that returns your results as images rather than text. For instance, here's the results for "beagle":

searchme

Each of the search results for "beagle" can be paged through until you find one that you like, without actually visiting the site. If you find something you like, you can save it in a "stack" (you can learn more about stacks here.) Basically, it's a way to save all your favorites in one tidy folder that you can visit again and again.

Here's the search results for beagle videos:

Just like with Web stacks, you can also use SearchMe to make video stacks. For instance, say you want to put your collection of Tom Jones videos all in one place for easy access. Once you create this stack of Tom Jones, you can let it play, one after the other, so you can listen to "What's New Pussycat" as you're searching the Web. Pretty cool.

Here's the SearchMe image results for "beagle":

Each image result has a short blurb of information about the image so you can immediately know if it's something you can use or not. Very helpful.

More visual search tools

  • Kartoo: Kartoo puts its results on an interactive, visual map for you to play with. Kartoo is a metacrawler/metasearch engine, which means that it does not come up with its own results, but aggregates the results of many other search engines.
  • Visual Dictionary: Traditionally, dictionaries are not known for being fun, entertaining, or even mildly interesting. However, that's where the Visual Dictionary Online comes in. Instead of a traditional words-only dictionary, the Visual Dictionary is based on images - more than 6,000 images, in fact, in 15 major themes that span from Astronomy to Sports.
