Google Is Leaking - Analyst Reports, Google Calendar, What's Next?

Thursday March 9, 2006
I must say, that Google has been QUITE the busy little bee this week. This from TechCrunch, who "mysteriously" obtained screenshots of the upcoming Google calendar, which, amazingly (it's shocking, brace yourself) looks like a CALENDAR. Be still, my beating heart.

I keed, I keed. It's kind of cool to get underground data such as this "leaked" on the Web, although my personal opinion is that Google is having a ton of fun "leaking" various things right now in order to draw attention from little things like Department of Justice subpoenas, censorship in China, etc. For instance, here's just a few of the whoopsies we've seen from Google lately:

  • Obviously the biggest is the Google Calendar. Which, coincidentally enough (not), came out about the same time as Google's click fraud fiasco.
  • Well, wait, this one's probably the biggest - Google "accidentally" leaked a bit more than it wanted to from an Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google) led financial meeting. AbsoluteValue posted the entire Google financial presentation on his blog, with this to say: "Putting the powerpoint slides in their raw form on the web was clearly a huge mistake since the company effectively "published" the comments to the world. Ah, the power and danger of the web!"
  • And from the same leaked presentation came rumors of GDrive; more from PortalIT: "The service would be called GDrive and could literally store every bit of data for users, that is, except for large files such as movies or music collections. The presentation stated: "with infinite storage, we can house all user files, including e-mails, Web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc., and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc.). Bwah hah hah!" (manaical laughter added in...or was it?)
Well, life is never dull over at the Googleplex, obviously. Even though it seems perhaps that there's lack of a coherent plan right now from everyone's favorite search engine (see the poll results, Google's clearly in the lead), I have complete and utter confidence that Google will eventually entrap us all in its underground sugar caves continue to innovate, continue to evolve.

There's always room for improvement, and I think we're seeing the teenage phase of Google here - snotty attitude, secretiveness (but we found stuff in its pockets doing the laundry-if Google didn't want us to find that stuff, why did it put it there?), and awkward growing pains that make us want to kick it out of the house but then it looks at us with those big Googly eyes, and we can't resist.
