Yahoo Adds Blog News to Yahoo News Search

I thought this commentary from RedHerring was especially interesting:

"Yahoo added blogs to its news search engine Tuesday so that blog links now appear next to news stories from major media web sites, further institutionalizing what was once mainly a grassroots publishing phenomenon.

The main page of Yahoo News Search now displays results with mainstream news media results on the left while blogs are displayed on the right.

“They will see a blogs link and will be able to do a blog search and find all the blogs related to that topic,” said Kathryn Kelly, Yahoo’s senior manager of public relations.

Yahoo denies that it sees blogs and podcasting as displacing the demand for regular news outlets by Internet users.

“The integration of blogs is more about augmenting mainstream media to provide a more extensive and comprehensive look at what other news is out there,” said Ms. Kelly. “It’s not our intention to replace the mainstream news media, but to complement it."

Right now there's really, really not a lot of blogs being found in the news search when you consider how many blogs are actually out there, but this number should grow over time. I see it as a nice way to get more viewpoints on stories I might be undecided on, etc.
