Google Blog Search-How Will This Affect Other Blog Search Services?

Thursday September 15, 2005
Google Blog Search debuted yesterday, and there is a lot of talk going on about how this new service will affect other blog search engines, such as Technorati, Gigablast, and Bloggernity.

The first thing I really noticed about Google Blog Search that has won my vote from the get-go is that it is fast. Road Runner Fast, people. One of the main beefs most folks have with other blog search engines is that they are so slow you can get up and make a burrito, put laundry in, and pet your cat for five minutes before it finds what you're looking for (this is a real life example from yours truly).

So let's try a little experiment with Technorati and Google Blog Search. I'm going to type in the same query into both blog search engines and see what happens.

Technorati:

  • Today I typed in websearch.about.com to see how many links I've gotten in the past few days. Today it only took a few seconds to get my results, and most of them were from "real" blogs, not spam sites set up to look like blogs. I kid you not, usually this takes about 5 minutes, and more often than not, I end up timing out. Either I'm hitting Technorati at a very slow time or they've done some major updating.

Google Blog Search:

  • Same query (link:websearch.about.com). I got a lot more links! Yay! However, on closer examination, most of these were spammy. Not so yay. Quality over quantity concept applies especially here. Google Blog Search was just as fast as Technorati today; however, yesterday I tried the two together and the contrast was a bit sad - Google Blog Search is just so dang fast.
So there's my highly technical analysis of how Google Blog Search will affect other blog search engines out there. The sheer simplicity, ease of use, and fast delivery of the service, which is really a hallmark of all Google's offerings, is going to draw a lot of converts who don't want to wait around for clogged databases to finally get through churning results. However, Google Blog Search needs to clean up the duplicate and spammy blog results in order to be a really top-notch blog search engine.
