Yahoo Mail Getting A Facelift...Maybe A Few Implants

Tuesday August 30, 2005
Via Yahoo Search Blog:
"As our mailboxes have grown, so has our need to quickly find the information stored in them. That’s why Yahoo! Mail is launching all new search features that will make mail management more efficient, and hopefully, a little more fun. The new mail search will be available to some users on August 30th and will gradually roll out to all Yahoo! Mail users over the coming months."
As I'm a longtime Yahoo mail user, I'm looking forward to this. I tried to figure out how long exactly I've been using Yahoo Mail, and it was in 1997, so getting close to ten years, can you believe it? I've had the same email ID the whole time, with absolutely no problems except the few that I created myself. Here's a few highlights from the upcoming rollout:
  • Search for attachments. A nice feature that will enable those of us who are, shall we say, a trifle disorganized, to search for important things we should keep better track of.
  • Search categories. Narrow down your email searches even further with the use of Yahoo Mail's various "search refinements": Senders, Folders, Attachments, Message Status, and Date.
  • Photo and Attachment View: View thumbnails for photos or for various filetypes. Again, very cool.
Yahoo continues to slowly but surely roll out improvements and tools that are well-thought-out additions to its already impressive lineup. Here's just a few of the highlights from what they've been up to this summer.
  • Yahoo 360: "an easy way to keep connected to friends and family with blogs, photos, and more."
  • Yahoo Music Unlimited: As soon as I get my new iPod (hint, hint, Mr. Websearch), I'm heading over to this inexpensive music download service.
  • Yahoo Local: This helped me the other day to figure out where the best ice cream parlor was next to the huge MegaComputerGadgets Store near me - complete with wiki-like features.
  • Konfabulator: Yahoo bought Konfabulator this summer.
  • Yahoo Farechase: Yahoo's new travel search engine.
  • Yahoo and Alibaba.com: Yahoo recently inked a deal with Alibaba.com that primes them for a huge expansion into China, the world's biggest emerging search market.
  • Yahoo Bulk Submit: Simple and easy submission service similar to Google site maps.
  • Yahoo My Web 2.0: social networking.
  • Yahoo Audio Search Beta: Find pretty much any audio file on the Web.
