Holy Security Breach, Batman

Saturday June 18, 2005
"Hi, Joe MasterCard Holder. Yes, this is your friendly account representative. Just wanted to let you know that your interest rate is going down and we might have had just a teeny little security breach...nothing to worry about. How many people does it potentially affect? Uhhh, well, say, maybe about
forty million.

Seriously, if you have a Master Card, be on the lookout for possible fraudulent activity on your account due to one of the largest security breaches in the history of credit cards.

"A hacker was able to access potentially 40 million credit card numbers by infiltrating the network of a company that processed payment data for MasterCard International and other companies, MasterCard said Friday. MasterCard has notified banks that issue its credit cards about the security breach, which victimized CardSystems Solutions Inc., a Tucson, Arizona, back-office processing company, said Jessica Antle, a MasterCard spokeswoman. Those banks will then take steps to notify their customers as they see fit, she said. " - InfoWorld
